What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, a form of self-defense and also a combat sport. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu focuses on fighting from the ground and promotes a concept that a smaller weaker person can defend himself or herself against a larger much stronger aggressor. By taking the fight to the ground and using proper technique and leverage by applying chokes and joint locks to defeat the other person.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu came about in the early 20th century. Formed from Kodokan Judo’s ground fighting (NE-Waza), Carlos Gracie took the fundamentals which he learned from master Mitsuyo Maeda and developed Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Eventually after experimentation and adaption Carlos passed his knowledge on to his family.
BJJ is one of the greatest forms of self-defense from around the globe. Being that a high number of fights end up on the ground BJJ becomes a highly effective martial art. Nearly everyone has an idea on how to throw some sort of punch but have no idea what to do when the fight goes to ground. This is when BJJ comes into play.
